Introduction to
Aviation
Aviation is an interest that man, as far as can be remembered, has
had. Man could walk on the earth and swim in the water, but he could only watch
birds fly .he too wanted to fly. But how?
There have been several attempts at getting off the ground. Some of
these attempts wear hilarious, but other more serious. People have jumped off
bridges with “wings” tied to their backs, and needless to say never attempt it again!
However experiment that let to modern aviation can be tracked to Sir Jeorge
Cayley of the UK who had understood the basic laws of flight and had flown
practical gliders. But it was the invention of the internal combustion engine,
as we call it. That gave the power to thrust in to the air the first flying
machine was made of wood, wire and canvas.
By the turn of the twentieth century all materials to enable man to
fly like the birds was available. Two serious efforts to make a heavier than
air machine airs born were taking place in the USA. Langley had made machine
that was to be catapulted in to the air. Unfortunately as the machine was beginning
catapulted, it hit a pillar and crashed. He was ridiculed to such an extent, he
gave up his experiments.
By 1908, the army gave the Wright brothers a contract worth $25,000
to build and improved version with sea for two persons. This aircraft was delivered
to the army in 1909 and become the world’s first military aircraft Sir Jeorge Cayley of the UK
In 1903 two brothers, Orville and Wilber Write built a machine called
‘The Flyers’. This machine got in to the air and flew for a cupule of minutes. This was the first powered flight by the man,
and was the catalyst for the most fantastic advances in technology.
Thought the Wright brothers have now built a machine that could
fly. There had to find a role for the machine for it to be made made profitable.
Building these machines merely for sport was not enough. The Wright brothers
then decided to offer the machine to the army. The Army also did not want a
machine that would only fly, but stated that they would be interested “in a
machine capable of horizontal flight and to carry and operator”. This is probably
the first military specification of an aircraft.
